Our hosts wined and dined us with fresh oysters, roasted oysters on the bonfire, fresh mussels, homemade chowder, Quadra Island wines and more. An afternoon on Marina Island spent eating lunch, exploring the mudflats and shucking oysters off the beach! Good living!!!

You might notice on this year’s Tofino Food and Wine Festival poster displays a weird barcode thingy. Maybe you have noticed this weird barcode thingy on business cards, magazine ads, billboards, or on the web?

This is a QR code.

Wondering what QR codes are all about?

Basically QR codes are 2 dimensional barcodes that are easily scanned using any modern mobile phone. The code is converted into a piece of text and/or link.

For instance, you walk around the city and notice a poster for an event that seems interesting (*cough* Tofino Food and Wine Festival *cough*). You take out your mobile phone, scan the QR Code with the QR Code Reader app you downloaded and will instantly get more information and a link to a website where you can book your tickets, bookmark a webpage for later, get a secret message, share contact information. You don’t have to type or remember anything and because QR Codes can be very small, this saves a lot of space on the product. I love it! In this day and age with my failing eyesight, impractical (but pretty) pink claw-like finger nails and rapidly growing impatience for the iphone keypad that auto corrects every other character – this little piece of marketing technology actually is pretty darn practical.

Imagine going through the Tofino Food and Wine Festival tasting a wine that you love and instead of trying to remember the next morning what vintage that amazing pinot was, you pull out your phone, scan the QR code on the bottle label and have all of the information on that wine and how to get it just a click away on your mobile!

The reader is quite versatile not only can you pick-up a code from a magazine or poster, you can also pick up from a LCD/ Computer monitor. I am no marketing guru but quite simply as a general rule the path of least resistance is the way we go. QR code is all action. Think about how far your advertising dollars could go with someone actually using that code.

How about a QR code contest to win two tickets to the event Bienvenue! A Taste of BC Bubbles ?

Scan this QR Code to win:

How about a special message from my heart to yours:
